dylan + the good ol' witching hour

sounds rather like a novel, huh?!

has anyone experienced this before? i remember a very brief period at the beginning of jack's life where he was unusually fussy, like clockwork, around the 6:30-7 pm time period. i remember the time vividly because it coincided with ben getting home from work and wanting to hold his son and yet, jack would just cry, cry, cry. i remember telling ben, "he doesn't do this during the day! i swear!" my mother was the one that told me about babies and their "witching hour." i thought it sounded nuts. and about as soon as it happened with jack, he had moved on from the weird phenomenon. well now, i am more prepared, knowing this is dylan's deal. i have to back up and explain about dylan though. i thought jack was an easy baby, but dylan, she is a breeze. she sleeps four hours straight at night, eats well, is steadily gaining weight and is just so happy and alert during the day. and the cuteness factor, well i don't even need to get into that! but. dylan's witching hour is intense! again, like clockwork, her's hits around 8:30-9 pm every night and has been happening for the past 2.5 weeks, every night. i decided to google witching hour and see what is out there about it... let me tell you, dylan's w.h. is nothing compared to some of the stories out there. man, some babies struggle with it for hours. dylan's fits usually only last about a half hour at most, but that's enough to make you feel crazy. and as fast and intense as they come on, they end the same. she gets seriously quiet and just stares off into oblivion, eventually falling peacefully asleep. funny. and as i type, she is resting on my body pillow, staring into the dimmed lights of our bedroom ceiling. her w.h. tonight lasted roughly 20 minutes. and now she's spent; she completely wore herself out. her eyelids are extremely heavy and her reddish-brown eyelashes are staying closed much longer than a blink. she's just so precious.

can you believe she's one month old tomorrow?! i can hardly believe that this time a month ago, i was gearing up for a day full of contractions. replaying the entire day's events make me laugh out loud! how silly to be walking around carrs, stopping in the middle of the aisle to catch my breath and deal with the sharp pains shooting down the front of my legs. all the while, i kept telling myself that it was nothing. just silliness!

dylan had her 4 week check up today. she measured 21 3/4 inches in length and 9 pounds 13 1/2 ounces. (she was 20.5 inches and 7.3 pounds at birth.) her cheeks are filling out nicely, her arms showing an extra fold in them and she's sportin' an adorable double chin. i love it! she looks incredibly cute right now and i would love to take a picture, but i hate to press my luck... tomorrow. promise.

  1. Love it! Her and Olivia are almost the same size. Blake had the Witching Hour for 2-3 hours every night, was horrible.

  2. At least her witching hour is early! Charlotte's has been between 10:00 and 10:30 almost every night and it last about 30 minutes but feels like hours! It's getting better though, she's goes about 2 or 3 nights in a row where she has her last bottle at 10:00 and goes to sleep for the night. The joys of motherhood:)

  3. i know, right?! 30 minutes of screaming CAN feel like an eternity! i read that it usually tapers off around the 3-4 month mark, but i'm hopeful she won't keep this up much longer.
