eklutna lake has a definite autumn-feel to it. maybe that's just because we went several times last year when the leaves were orange and that fall smell lingered in the air. last wednesday, we found ourselves in a true valley, mountains hugging us on either side. this walk is nothing serious, rarely an uphill, just puddles, dirt, rocks and all things that scream "you'll need a bath upon entrance home" but that's ok. the good thing about this jaunt is that it pretty much assures sound and solid nap times; i'd say, an average of 3 hours. you're higher in the mountains, closer to the sun (and God) and all the running and rock throwing, just wipes you out!
we always bring plenty of snacks, sweatshirts, dogs and a pistol. while we've never seen wildlife but eagles and ravens, the bears are out there. you can never be too safe. but, i'm sure with our brood of happily-screaming tots, the bears want nothin to do with what we're packing.
