holiday cheermeister

i came across this last year, but too late in time for the holidays. so this year, i'm on it! feel free to play along, and learn a little something about each other.

Wrapping paper or gift bags?
i've been in the habit of gift bags because i have SO MANY that i need to get rid of. but, i prefer to wrap, love to wrap, (even used to wrap at Macy's during the holidays!) this year, i bought jack blue wrapping paper (cars themed, naturally), and dylan's is pink with penguins and snow flakes.

Real tree or artificial? i still can't believe i did this. i bought an artificial tree. it makes me sad just reading it. but, the mess of the needles and watering it every day, just put me over the top. although, maybe because last year this time, i had a significant belly, and it was just one more task for me to do. i guess we could always go real next year. i do miss the fragrant pine.

When do you put up the tree? i like to get it up after right after thanksgiving, but i think that's part of the problem. by christmastime, the needles are so brittle and a severe fire hazard. this year, i put it up a week and a half before thanksgiving because i wanted it to be up when we got back from vacation. with all our darkness these days, i keep it lit all day, and it fills our great room with a wonderful glow. makes me smile.

Do you like eggnog? a big, fat no.

Favorite gift received as a child? because my birthday and christmas are only a month and a half apart, it's hard to really remember what was given when. i remember getting barbies. even, one year i received the barbie '57 chevy. that was pretty great, especially for barbie because she no longer had to walk across my bedroom. she could now ride in style. classic style.

Hardest person to buy for? parents, but i think the practical side of me just takes over at christmas. i've stopped stressing about what to buy for them because they have everything (or they tell you i don't need anything). am i right?!

Easiest person to buy for? my babes. i could buy jack any sort of truck or car, block set, puzzle... i know how to please him. i'm sure dylan will be just as easy next year.

Do you have a nativity scene? not yet. i have had my eye on the willow tree figurines. just one of those things i don't think about except during the holidays, but by then it's like, oh, maybe next year.

Mail or email Christmas cards? email christmas cards? oh my gosh, no! i love the mail. and i love to get mail.

Favorite Christmas movie? wow. just one? definitely national lampoon's christmas vacation and jim carrey's how the grinch stole christmas. and of course, home alone.

When do you start shopping? august.

Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? never.

Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? i make toffee. oooh, i kinda forgot. time to get started! and christmas eve, we prepare king crab and moose steaks, twice baked potatoes, salad, fresh garlic bread... i'm ready to eat right now!

Lights on the tree? yep, white ones.

Favorite Christmas songs? bing crosby's i'll be home for christmas. the meaning has shifted over these past 10 years, but it still makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Travel at Christmas or stay home? we're forever traveling to anchorage. i can see that changing as the kiddos get older and don't want to leave their new toys though.

Can you name all of Santa's Reindeer? now, dasher! now, dancer! now, prancer and vixen! on, comet! on, cupid! on, donder and blitzen! i've read the night before christmas just a few times...

Angel on the tree top, or a star? star

Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? we do presents from some family on christmas eve when they're over for dinner, but we do just our family's presents on christmas morning. then, when we're in anchorage, there's always more to open. and the ones that arrive in the mail... well, those usually get opened as they arrive.

Favorite ornament theme or color? my mother has been great about passing me my ornaments from childhood, but she didn't do this until we were in our home. so our first christmas in 2004, we had none! so i made all the ornaments. we still have a few from that first christmas, but have continued to collect a lot over the years. we bought three new ones when we were on maui, and jack picked them out: a rainbow fish, a sparkly blue dolphin and an orange and yellow caterpillar. we noticed this year that i have a slight obsession with snowmen. lots and lots of cute snowmen ornaments.

What do you want for Christmas this year? as ridiculous as it may sound, i want my family and friends to be happy and healthy and feel as blessed about their life as i do.

  1. Love this....I so want to copy it :)

Once Eric and I moved in together, we got all our ornaments from when we were little. They will go on the tree in like 3 more years, once the little ones won't try to break them!
